General Requirements for Digital Files

FILE FORMATS: (PC or Mac)
  • If possible, save your ad in its entirety as a TIFF or EPS.
  • We accept PDF files—call for specific details.
  • We accept ads prepared in the following programs:

    • QuarkXpress
    • Photoshop
    • PageMaker
    • Illustrator

  • Don't risk having your ad miss an issue. If you send a disk using a program other than those listed above, we will be forced to return your disk for the correct program.
  • Include a full-sized proof of your file (a black & white or color laser print, or a color proof). If no proof is supplied, we will send a proof for your approval. Charge may apply.
  • If changes are made to ad after we run film, you will be charged:

    • $50 per 4-Color film
    • $10 per Black & White film

MEDIA:
  • We accept ad files on the following media:

    • Zip Disk 100MB
    • 3½" Floppy Disk
    • Super Disk 120MB
    • CD-ROM
    • Syquest 270MB Disk

  • Include on disk:

    • All graphics files
    • All fonts used on ad (for Post Script fonts, be sure to include a screen font and a printer font for each)
    • Native application file (where applicable)
GRAPHICS & COLOR:
  • Grayscale images, black & white and color photos should be scanned at 300 d.p.i.
  • Line art graphics (artwork with no screens) should be scanned at 1270 d.p.i.
  • Be sure to convert all colors to CMYK. In Quark, spot colors should be CMYK, with "Process Separation" on.
  • Do not use Quark default colors "Red," "Green," or "Blue," and do not name your colors these names.
AD SIZES:
  • Make sure files bleed when required—see bleed information under Unit Sizes & Specifications W" x H" on the appropriate rate card. (Request a media kit to receive a rate card.)
  • In Quark, the size listed in "Document Setup" should be the trim size of the ad, not the bleed size.
EMAIL:
Request a media kit to receive a rate card, digital file requirements, an advertising contract, a current issue, and more.

If you have any questions regarding these specifications, feel free to contact Cathy Schnoes, your ad coordinator.
